I don’t know how many of you believe in/pay attention to astrology or the different characteristics of the signs, but I definitely do. I’m a Sagittarius and I nearly am to a t what they’re described as being. One of those lovely characteristics involved unabashed curiosity. If my curiosity is piqued, I’m done for until I’ve given in. It’s that bad. My latest give-in comes at the end of a long week at work and the successful submission of my first art portfolio. I figure after such a long eight days, I’m allowed some mindless music, right? I’m going to listen to One Direction‘s album Up All Night. Yes, I’m going there.
The album opens with the catchy What Makes You Beautiful, which I’ve heard before but can’t place where I may have heard it. The song is sweet enough, and just what I expected: mindless pop music.
One Thing is shamelessly cheesy and I love every second of it. It’s upbeat and the boy-band vocals work so well in tracks like this. This band almost reminds me of the Backstreet Boys mixed with a little Justin Bieber and a splash of Jonas Brothers in the early days. What else could a girl ask for?
Up All Night makes me do a double-take. I’ll admit, the only thing I know about this band is from the hatred I see for them on Tumblr (great reason to be curious, right?). I honestly thought they were just another generic manufactured band for tweens, but this song makes me think differently. The lyrics seem a little more mature than I thought their fan base was. Then again, the same thing could be said for the Spice Girls in my generation.
Taken is a slower song obviously exposing the turmoils of teenage relationships and apparently those girls who only want you when you’re taken. Who knew?
Stole My Heart is an interesting techno-pop song that is as catchy as it could get. This is actually probably one of my favorite songs on the album.
The album wraps up with Moments, a slow song that feels more genuine and less cheesy than the majority of the rest of the album.
Was this album something mind-blowing? No way. I can say that I definitely enjoyed it after a pretty long few days at work. I always enjoy mindless pop tunes as an escape from every day life and that’ll never change. I used to take myself so seriously that I wouldn’t entertain the idea of listening to this album. Thank goodness I got outta that cause sometimes it really is nice to sit back, space out, and hear some boy band sing sickeningly cheesy lyrics.
